Kay Flock rushed off all the momentum he was building (and he was by far the biggest drill rapper out of the Bronx), but then things slowed down a bit due to his legal troubles. The video for the song is almost a year old but has 32 million views. His 2021 single “Is Ya Ready” was visceral and towering, featuring a handsome new rapper mixing the almost belligerent nature of the drill with blatant threats and the energy of leaping through the screen. The energetic young Bronx rapper has been making a name for himself over the past year, one snarling verse at a time. XXL highlights more of the new names popping up these days, with all but Chicago’s PGF Nuk hailing from the New York area.Īny conversation about the recent explosion of drill among NYC youth is incomplete without naming Kay Flock. ![]() The Big Apple’s more recent acts have included artists like the late Pop Smoke, Fivio Foreign, Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow of Winners Circle, who have enjoyed solid success while their music continues to garner acclaim. Aside from all the real-life beef dissing and airing, drill has taken over in New York City. Brooklyn drill, and later Bronx drill, is like a cross between the original Chi-Town drill and the UK drill, emulating (and using directly) their counterparts across the pond and driving the streets in very specific ways telling way. UK Drill shares some creative aspects with grime, borrowing many of the flows but using local slang and faster beats than the genre’s Midwestern origins. While drill music started in Chicago and really took off as a subgenre in 2012, the drum- and hi-hat-heavy sound was revamped worldwide thanks to Chief Keef’s national look. ![]()
